Child Labour in Canada Essay

Child Labour in Canada Essay Example

Children are exploited through child labour all around the world. Canadians may think of child labour as happening in remote corners of the world. However, the fact is that child labour is still a widespread problem in Canada and around the globe. Child labour can cause severe physical and emotional damage and death. It has the potential to lead to enslavement as well as sexual or economic mistreatment. And in essentially every case, it denies children access to education and health care, limiting their fundamental rights and jeopardising their futures.

The global number of children in child labour has increased to 160 million, an increase of 8.4 million children in the previous four years, with an additional 9 million children in danger due to COVID-19. Approximately 4.3 million children are forced into labour. This essay will inform you of child labor’s effects, including psychological damage, loss of opportunities due to lack of education, trafficking, and lack of social development.

At to start of my essay, the effect of child labour is psychological damage. The psychological consequences of child labour should not be overlooked. These children are so young and are working until exhaustion that they are vulnerable to depression, drug addiction, PTSD, and other mental health issues. The majority come from underprivileged homes, minority groups, or have been taken from their family, so these kids have little protection.

There were a total of 25 studies showed that proved, the majority of which were cross-sectional (from a population or part of a larger group of related things), have been linked to a variety of adverse health consequences that are not just limited to slow development and malnutrition, but also behavioural and emotional problems, and lower coping efficacy. Child labour is proved by the International Labor Organization (ILO) as “work that deprives children of their childhood, ability, and dignity, and is harmful to physical and mental development.”

This includes types of work that are mentally, physically, socially, or morally harmful to children, e.g., factory work, slavery, serfdom(when a person is forced to live and work on land belonging to another person, often with little or no pay), prostitution and many more traumatic jobs. The effect of child labour is psychological damage. In the second place, the impact of child labour is the loss of opportunities due to a lack of education.

In its 2015 study, the ILO analyses the influence of child labour in keeping children out of school and the lack of access to cheap and high-quality schooling as a barrier to children entering the labour force. Child work has a significant detrimental impact on school attendance. Employed children’s school attendance rates in certain nations are only around half those of non-working children. There is a significant negative association between children’s economic activity levels aged 7-14 and youth literacy rates aged 15-24.

Boys and girls often have different occupations. Girls are often overrepresented in non-economic activities such as house tasks in their homes.  They also frequently carry a double load of work outside and at home, leaving little time for study. When children manage to balance their job and schooling, their academic performance commonly worsens. Consider all the changes they passed up purely to provide for their families. So many children have the potential to make significant contributions to society but are simply born in the wrong environment.

The effect of child labour is the loss of opportunities due to a lack of education. Moreover,  the impact of child labour is trafficking and sexual exploitation. At least 1.2 million children have been trafficked annually for child labour and sexual exploitation. Most child labourers work in the underground economy, where laws and regulations do not protect them. The most horrific types of child labour are unlawful.

While new research has shed light on the nature of child trafficking, little is known about its extent. Child trafficking is classified as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, hiding, or acceptance of children for exploitation. It violates their rights and jeopardises their well-being. Children who work experience loneliness and depression, which often prevents them from developing healthy emotions as they grow and can lead to various long-term health effects.

They are more likely to have a developmental disability due to the significant health risks associated with unsafe working environments and doing physical tasks that are too advanced for them. Children given hard work are often more minor than those given a chance to play and grow naturally. The effect of child labour is trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Furthermore, the effect of child labour is a lack of social development. Child work hurts children’s social development since they do not spend enough time with peers their own age or family members. Children need to have personal and positive relationships to develop and feel confident. Working long hours, even part-time, prevents children from correctly forming these relationships, resulting in insecure adults at risk for other emotional issues.

They are also at a higher risk of respiratory disorders. They are exposed to hazardous substances that can affect their physical development. These children are frequently underweight, which leads to significant physical and mental issues later in life. Children need to be children because they are forced to work. It is jeopardizing tomorrow’s adults.

Instead of having developed and opinionated adults, we will have ones with mental and psychological issues. To sum up this essay,  the effects of child labour are psychological damage, loss of opportunities due to lack of education, trafficking, and lack of social development. Victims of child labour frequently suffer from depression and anxiety, which drives them to engage in harmful behaviours such as smoking, drinking, or drug addiction. Abuse in childhood can lead to a lifetime of low self-esteem, depression, and relationship problems.

Child labourers, in general, might suffer from long-term health difficulties due to malnutrition, chemical exposure, abuse, injuries, dehydration, and psychological trauma. Children in agriculture may be exposed to harmful pesticides or fertilisers. As specific jobs need the use of sharp blades and heavy equipment, as well as the transportation of heavy items. Physical injuries are sustained by children. For various reasons, child labour is a critical economic and social concern. Children are deprived of their youth as a result. It will hurt their physical, mental, and intellectual ability. Fundamentally, child labour reflects poverty and a lack of economic opportunity.
